Who you will help

The Shuni Field and Forest Center provides fun, hands-on outdoor education, and overnight accommodation for 500 students and teachers at once. Here, students learn about the wonders of nature and the land of Israel, all in the fresh air and cool shade of the oaks and pines. Many of us can recall our summer camp days, when a large part of our social culture was being formed, learning to work together, forming life-long friendships around the campfire, and spending time outdoors. Engaging youth in environmental issues is a crucial step towards a climate-resilient future. They will be the next champions of our environment.

The Shuni Field and Forest Center hopes to establish a cooking corner in the forest, and a composter that transforms organic waste into cooking gas. The system, into which students will toss organic waste from their meals and within 12 hours see it turn into cooking gas, teaches all visitors about the ecological value of reusable energy and avoiding pollution. The cooking corner will contain the composting system, two built-in tabun ovens, a saj (breadmaking) corner, and five barbeque grills. Practically, this cooking corner has the additional advantage of decreasing the burden on the field kitchen at times when the center is fully occupied.

Quote: "We explain that this is not gas we had purchased, which can harm nature," says Yeremi David, director of the Shuni Field and Forest Center, "at first they find it hard to believe, but after we explain the process to them, they all get excited".
